JOB TITLE: Deputy Grounds-person
 
REPORTING TO: Head Grounds-person
 
WORKING HOURS: Full-time Monday to Friday 08:15-16:00 with 30-minute lunch
 
LOCATION: Head office – Bingley
Off-site trial work (opportunity to work on/at global sporting events)
 
 
JOB PURPOSE:
 
The Deputy Grounds-person assists the Head Grounds-person with the organisation and supervision (both direct and indirect) of all trials ground staff. To ensure that all works are carried out in a timely fashion to the required standard and to meet the objectives of the specific research trials. To monitor and maintain the trials ground (mostly grass surfaces) on three yearly cycles, or as required to meet specific trial requirements. To maintain all other sports trials areas to the level required for research trials to be carried out annually.
 
 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Assist Head grounds-person with administrative and record keeping tasks.
  • Assist, where needed and appropriate, with carrying out maintenance of the trials ground along with research trial work.
  • Responsible for assisting the Head Grounds person in practical operation of trials ground.
  • Responsible for organizing and coordinating trials ground staff day to day, to make sure they carry out their work objectives efficiently and to the required standard, reporting back to the Head Grounds Person.
  • Liaise with Research Managers and other Research staff on resource availability and task prioritization.
  • Oversee and assist with maintenance of trials ground equipment to make sure it is in good working order and fit for use.
  • Assist with and help supervise the construction of trials and area preparation, as well as assist with research data collection and testing.
  • Undertake a wide range of ancillary activities, largely relating to the maintenance of STRI property and premises.
  • Ensure all staff are appropriately trained in all aspects of trials work, making sure tasks are completed to the highest standard.
  • Liaise with the head grounds-person to develop and implement weekly plans to ensure high-level delivery of all bespoke areas.
  • Support and possibly lead the training and development of junior team members.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
  • Grounds Maintenance Qualification Level 3 or above or relevant experience.
  • PA1 & PA6 qualifications (essential) and PA2 qualification (desirable).
  • Extensive knowledge it the use of turf care machinery such as but not limited to mowers, scarifiers, aerators, sprayers, line markers, wear machine, sprinklers and pop-ups, tractors and rollers.
  • Excellent verbal communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer literate to be able to assist with data collection and record keeping.
  • Management experience is ideal, but not essential.
  • Willing to work flexible hours.
  • Effective team player.
  • Clean UK driving licence.
  • An interest in sports.
  • An interest in sustainability and the environment is desirable.
  • NVQ qualifications in sports turf maintenance or equivalent is desirable.
