Deputy Course Manager

An exciting opportunity has become available at Royal Birkdale for a passionate and ambitious Deputy Course Manager to join our management team. As Deputy, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the greenkeeping team and play a key role in both the daily and long-term planning of the department. Additionally, you will be involved in upcoming course construction projects and preparations for The 154th Open.

We are seeking a proactive and dedicated individual to help complete the final phase of a major course renovation, which involves extensive work across 11 holes, before preparing the course to host The Open in 2026. The successful candidate will report to the Course Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Taking full responsibility of course management in the absence of the Course Manager
  • Involved with the management team to plan and prioritise work agreed in the maintenance and project programmes
  • Lead and motivate the skilled greenkeeping team to ensure standards are consistently met
  • Assisting in any training of staff and setting standards of practice
  • Ability to communicate with team members of all levels of experience
  • Implement the club’s health and safety procedures and documents

Essential Attributes:

  • Minimum NVQ Level 3 in turf management or equivalent
  • PA 1,2 and 6a spraying qualifications
  • In depth knowledge of fine turf agronomy, industry products and modern machinery
  • Minimum 10 years golf course maintenance experience
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Modern approach to golf course management
  • Ability to carry out and understand all greenkeeping practices
  • In-house renovation experience
  • Experience in a turf management managerial position
